Who Are the Groomsmen and Why Buy Groomsmen Gifts?
A wedding is a festive event where both the bride and groom have helpers. A groomsman (groomsmen is plural) is one of the men in the groom’s entourage in the wedding ceremony. Typically, the groom would pick his very best friends and relatives (such as a brother, future brother-in-law or cousins). To be picked as a groomsman is considered an honor but it also comes with some wedding day duties. One is usually named the “best man” and there are also ushers in large weddings where many guests need to be seated.
During the wedding and the time leading up to it, the groomsmen have some duties they are expected to participate in. The most useful duty is in helping guests find their seats or places before the wedding ceremony gets underway. They also typically stand up at the altar or front of the church with the groom as he awaits his bride. The groomsmen chat with single guests or anyone that looks bored. They also dance with single guests or bridesmaids to keep the party atmosphere up. If you need anyone to carry a gift or luggage, you get one of the groomsmen to help. These male members of the wedding party also throw a bachelor party or night out for the groom.
It’s only nice to thank your wedding party men with some groomsmen gifts. These presents are usually given during the rehearsal dinner which is before the wedding. These men are your best friends and relatives and they are going out of their way to participate and help in your wedding. It is expected that you thank them with a token gift. It does not have to be expensive, but certainly some appreciation and useful gift such as a pocket knife, tool, cufflinks, flask, mug, Zippo lighter or the like is in order.
